Summer heat has belatedly arrived and all I can think of is cold stuff to eat and drink. Last week I decided to forgo my coffee at a favourite coffee shop and ordered a milkshake instead. BAD MISTAKE...horrid sweet milk, no sign of ice cream anywhere.
So, came home and made old fashioned ice cream using my mother's recipe, then made milkshakes mom's way too. So forthwith, some ice cream recipes and a milkshake tip!
I have an ice cream machine, but did without one for years. You mix the custard, freeze for an hour. Beat thoroughly and repeat 3 more times then leave to freeze. A shallow container also works better because then you don't struggle to serve the rock hard frozen product.
My sisters may disown me, sharing the family secret recipe....
Old- Fashioned Vanilla Ice-cream
1L milk
1/2 cup sugar
1/2 tin condensed milk (the sweet kind, not evaporated milk)
1T cornflour/maizena
2 eggs
250ml cream
Vanilla paste, essence or fresh seeds
Boil milk and sugar together, add condensed milk and maizena mixed with a little milk. Boil for 5 minutes. Mix a little hot mixture into the egg yolks, turn heat off and strain yolks into custard and stir well. Leave to cool, add vanilla and stiffly beaten egg whites and stiffly beaten cream, freeze.
Vanilla Ice-cream... the new way
250ml cream
2 eggs, separated
6T castor sugar
Vanilla
Place cream, egg yolks and whites in 3 separate bowls. Beat well, adding 2T castor sugar to each bowl. Combine and freeze.
For GOOD milkshake: lots of ice cream, 1big spoon of Horlicks powder, little milk, blend and ooohhh Bliss!!
Healthy ice-cream version coming. Yes, there is healthy ice-cream!
You and your family and friends need not fear an empty plate when excluding meat! Eating vegetarian food is anything but boring. There is no reason to eat a plate of boiled veggies night after night simply because you want to stop eating meat. Hopefully this blog will offer you some suggestions, encourage you to experiment and be brave. I am having fun and sometimes the result is great and sometimes not. At least try.
Looks good, I always avoid making ice-cream without a machine, but maybe I will try! Thanks for recipes!
